  3. A short-lived energy burst, which produces gamma rays. The origin of these bursts is not known for certain, but they 
  4. may be caused by collisions between neutron stars and black holes.
  5. During the past twenty years, several thousand bursts have been observed from all directions of the universe. The one 
  6. thing the gamma bursts have in common is that they come from very long distances away. That is, there have been 
  7. many such bursts in the younger universe.
